What is an E Ink Display?

E Ink display(electronic ink display) is known for its paper-like effect and lower power consumption. It utilizes electronic paper display technology to imitate ink on paper. Unlike traditional LCDs or OLEDs, E Ink displays reflect light rather than emit it, making them friendly to the user’s eyes. Even in direct sunlight, users can easily read on the e-ink display.

What is the advantage of an E Ink display?

Low Power Consumption

Unlike traditional screens that continuously refresh to display images, electronic paper displays only consume power when the content of the display changes. In fact, our e-ink displays have been proven to use up to 90% less power than conventional LCD screens in typical usage scenarios. With electrophoretic technology, the e-ink screen display uses tiny microcapsules filled with charged black and white particles. When an electric field is applied, these particles move to the surface to create the desired image. Once the image is set, the display does not require more power to support it. Apart from the low refresh rate, e ink screen display reflects ambient light, which means they don’t need a backlight to be readable. This reflective technology further reduces power consumption compared to conventional displays that require constant illumination. Thus, the epaper displays have excellent viewing angle stability, ideal for devices like e-readers, smart labels, and smartwatches that need long battery life.

Eye-Friendly

Compared with traditional LED or LCD screens, the e-ink display will not directly emit light into the eyes. It relies on ambient light to make the screen visible, similar to how paper reflects light. E Ink screens usually have a matte surface, reducing glare from external light sources. This reduces eye strain, especially during long-time reading. By minimizing blue light exposure, e-ink screen display is gentle and healthy to the eyes. Electronic paper displays offer high contrast and sharp text. They are static, not refreshing in the same way as traditional screens, allowing a good eye-pleasing refreshing experience without blurriness or glare.

Durable to Use

E-ink displays offer long-lasting and reliable screen performance. Its electronic paper screen produces less heat as the low-power consumption. It needs power only when someone refresh the picture. After the screen is fully displayed, there is Zero power consumption all the time. In lower operating temperatures, the e paper display places less strain on the hardware, thus enhancing the device’s durability. Plus, e-paper displays are built with flexible plastic substrate, or feature IP65 waterproof level and IK08 impact protection rating, making them less prone to cracking or breaking upon impact. They are able to withstand drops, bumps, and other physical stresses. Some electronic ink displays are also built to withstand various environmental conditions, such as temperature fluctuations and humidity, further enhancing their durability.

The Growing Trends in E Ink Displays

Colorful E paper Displays: E ink display provides an excellent visual experience without compromising the benefits of traditional monochrome E Ink technology.

Foldable and Rollable E-ink Displays: The flexibility of E Ink screens is paving the way for foldable and rollable devices, enabling new form factors for e-readers, smartphones, and digital signage.

More Interactive E-ink Display: With the integration of touch and pen input functions, E Ink displays are becoming more interactive, allowing users to engage with content in more dynamic ways, like the wiring on the e-ink notebook, e-ink whiteboard, and e-ink reader.
